Results No 2 DRA Prize Shoot at Mt Barker by 5.56

On Sunday, the 26th of February, the Southern District Rifle Association held its annual Open Championship at the Mount Barker Rifle Range.

The match was held in stifling conditions and was shot over 500 and 600 yards.

Thirty-three shooters from around the State including as far away as Woomera and Bordertown braved the heat and humidity plus a quick shower of rain.

A light breeze mostly from the left blew in the shooters faces all day but did change in strength which on occasions saw raised dust. This breeze saw very few possibles (50 /50) scored for the day.

Greg Traeger (Murray Bridge) was the overall winner for the day in a close tussle which saw the first five shooters only a couple of points apart.

Traeger won with a score of 146.15 from club-mate Gordon Harrison on 146.14. Next were Mount Barker shooters Alison Hansen, Richard McInnes and Graham Hancock.

Traeger made a good start early at 500 yards with a 49.7. This score was just ahead of daughter, Jasamine with 49.4.

B Grade was won by John Cadd (Murray Bridge) with steady start of 47.3.

C Grade was won by Bill Philips (Postal and Railways) with 43.2.

Trevor Otto (Kapunda) won F Class Standard with 55.1 and Tim Manning (Cyclists and Torrens Valley) took a slight lead with 57.1 in F Class Open.

The shooters moved back to 600 yards and were protected from the fierce sun by shade sails.

Gordon Harrison made a bid for the lead in A Grade with superb 50.7. This score was the narrowest of victories over another veteran Bob Jacobs (Bordertown) with 50.6.

Craig George (Phoenix) won B Grade with 48.4 from club-mate Chris Williams with 48.3.

Phillips continued on his winning way in C Grade with 43.1.

Frank Marshall (Murray Bridge) was the winner in F Class Standard with 57.4.

Richard Braund (CTV) was the winner of F Class Open at this range with 59.4.
A welcome lunch break was held supplied by the Mount Barker ladies who refreshed the shooters ready for the battle at the second 600 yards.

The weather eased and the scores improved.

Harrison shot first and put a good score on the board for other shooters to chase.

Traeger was up to the challenge and in almost perfect conditions he scored 50.6 to take the lead.

Only one other shooter still had a chance with the final rounds and that was Alison Hansen. Unfortunately she dropped one point which gave her an overall score of 146.7 for third place.

George with 48.3, Phillips with 43.1 and Braund with 57.4 dominated their Grades again at the second 600 yards.

Bryan Galpin (CTV) won F Class Standard at the final range with 58.4.

The scores were all tallied and checked and the winners announced.

Traeger thanked all the organisers and especially the competitors who had made the effort to attend in the hot weather. He also was the winner of the SARA medal for the top shooter from the Southern DRA.

George was the winner in B Grade with 142.8.

Phillips shot consistently all day to win C Grade with 129.4.

Otto won F Class Standard with 169.7.

Manning won F Class Open with 167.4.
